Shopping for a new car? The importance of researching your options cannot be understated; you need the best car for your money, and we're here to help you find that car. A new vehicle is an investment, but a vehicle without lasting performance is not a good one. Read on for a breakdown between the Subaru Legacy and the Honda Accord.

See what the 2019 Accord can do for you--or can't do for you--when put head-to-head against the impressive new 2019 Subaru Legacy.

2019 Subaru Legacy Sedan

Compare Performance & Capability

  • Accord offers more standard horsepower (192 HP to 175 HP)
  • Legacy offers more available horsepower (256 HP to 252 HP)
  • Legacy offers better control on the road with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Standard
  • Accord has better MPG on paper, but this is due in part to the lack of AWD

Let's start with the capabilities of the two vehicles. The Legacy comes standard with All-Wheel Drive to help you conquer any terrain that you come across in your daily drive. Dirt roads or poorly maintained streets are no match for the hardy, adventure-ready Legacy. The Accord does offer an AWD option, so if you need something with that capability you should definitely lean towards the Legacy.

The Accord and the Legacy both offer comparable engine power and strong fuel economy, with the Accord offering slightly more horsepower and better mileage without AWD, but the Legacy offering better handling with AWD and a larger fuel tank. Both vehicles will deliver strength for a fun, responsive drive, but the Legacy actually has a smaller turning radius to help you maneuver easily on the road. Both vehicles have continuously variable automatic transmissions, but the Legacy has a standard automatic transmission with a manual mode if you want extra control when shifting.

Subaru Legacy Interior

Compare Technology & Features

  • Legacy Exclusive Features include:
    • Standard Heated Mirrors
    • Available Electrochromatic Rearview Mirror
  • Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is standard on the Legacy; a pricey upgrade on the Accord

We demand more from our vehicle's tech features than ever before, and the Legacy excels in this category by offering advanced features standard, instead of pricing options found with the Accord. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities come standard with the updated Subaru STARLINK multimedia system; you can pair your smartphone and enjoy integrating your music, apps, and calls. The Accord offers these capabilities as available features on the EX trim level, but not standard on the base trim like the Legacy.

Let's check out some luxury features that are offered exclusively by the Legacy. It offers standard heated mirrors and an available electrochromic rearview mirror; the Accord offers neither of these features. A standard leather-wrapped steering wheel also elevates the interior luxury, a standard remote trunk release allows for extra convenience, and an available remote engine start lets you get the engine warmed up from the comfort of your home.

Compare Safety & Security

  • The 2019 Subaru Forester can be equipped with a full suite of EyeSight features
  • The 2019 Honda CR-V can be equipped with a full suite of HondaSensing features
  • ONLY the Subaru Legacy was rated as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award recipient

Both vehicles offer advanced driver assist safety features like a lane departure warning, but the Legacy also offers a blind spot monitor and a cross-traffic alert system to keep you safe on the highway or when backing out on a busy street.

Both vehicles offer solid basic standard safety features like brake assist, stability control, and traction control to keep you secure. The Accord's AWD comes up again however when you're thinking of your vehicle's effectiveness when you need control on the road. Sometimes you need to make a split-second decision to avoid an accident, and we'll take a vehicle with responsive AWD any day if we need to stay in control.

The Legacy was awarded an overall five-star NHTSA safety rating with five-stars in every category. The Accord has not yet received an NHTSA rating, but it has performed well in past years. The Legacy is also an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ receiving the top marks in all categories, while the Accord earned a Top Safety Pick award, but received lower marks in the Headlights category.

Trim Level Comparison: Base & Top-Level for the Legacy and Accord

Subaru Legacy 2.5i vs. Honda Accord LX

Right off the bat, you're saving money when you choose the Subaru Legacy since it has a starting total Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of $22,545 -- more than $1,400 less than the Accord's total MSRP of $24,460. If you want to add all-wheel drive to the Accord, which comes standard in the Legacy, that's an option that's going to add even more to the car's price tag.

The Legacy comes with a standard 2.5-liter engine that offers plenty of horsepower and torque to get around Tucson, though we have to admit that the Accord's turbocharged 1.5-liter engine does offer a bit more of each performance metric. However, the Legacy comes with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as a standard feature -- which allows you better control and capability in difficult road conditions. As we mentioned earlier, that's a costly add-on for the Accord. While the Accord offers better estimated fuel economy, that's due in large part to the fact that it the rating is for a non-all-wheel drive-equipped model.

Both introductory sedans are nicely-equipped, but the Legacy 2.5i includes some standard features that can't be found on the Accord LX trim. The Subaru STARLINK multimedia system in the base model Legacy includes Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ connectivity, providing you easy access to your music, contacts, and apps, while a leather-wrapped steering wheel and remote trunk release add luxury car features at no extra cost.

Both sedans come with standard safety features like brake assist, traction control, and stability control. We've already mentioned that the Legacy offers more assured driving thanks to the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and it's worth noting that the Subaru Legacy 2.5i was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ -- the top score possible. The Accord earned a Top Safety Pick nomination, earning lower marks for its headlights.

Subaru Legacy 3.6R Limited vs. Accord Touring 2.0T

As you move up to the highest trim offered for each sedan, the price difference only grows. The Legacy 3.6R Limited has a total MSRP of $32,085, while the Accord Touring 2.0T carries a price tag of $36,690. That difference can save you about $60 on your monthly payment, and more than $4,400 over the course of a six-year loan! Plus, you'll have to pay more to add all-wheel drive to the Accord, while it's standard issue for the Legacy.

The Legacy 3.6R Limited is powered by a 3.6-liter engine that manufactures 256 horsepower, besting the 252 horsepower produced by the Accord's 2.0-liter engine. Since all-wheel drive does lower fuel economy a bit, the standard Accord Touring 2.0T does offer slightly better fuel economy ratings. However, the Legacy 3.6R Limited has a larger fuel tank, so you're likely to find yourself refueling on the same schedule either way.

As you would expect, befitting their status within their respective trim lineups, each sedan comes loaded with an array of standard features. However, once again the Legacy takes this comparison thanks to the inclusion of some standard features that the Accord doesn't include. These include power lumbar support, an in-glass antenna, and a CD player.

The Legacy 3.6R Limited and its Accord Touring 2.0T are both extremely safe sedans, with each earning a 5-Star Overall crash safety rating from the NHTSA. However, in addition to the improved handling that the Legacy enjoys thanks to standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, it also includes active front seat head restraints -- which aren't even available for the Accord.
