Subaru Safety

Safety drives Subaru design.

Subaru is the only manufacturer with IIHS Top Safety Picks for all models, two years in a row. We don't shy away from crash tests, because safety is at the forefront of our design.

Control and Braking

Along with the traction that Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive gives you, Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), a stability control system, automatically senses steering and braking inputs to help keep the vehicle on the driver's intended path. The VDC system also includes an all-wheel all-speed traction control system.

In stopping situations, the Anti-Lock Braking system (ABS) pulses braking power to help prevent wheel lockup. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) optimizes the distribution of braking force between the front and rear wheels according to how the vehicle is loaded with passengers and cargo. And the Brake Assist system helps ensure maximum pressure is applied to the brakes as quickly as possible in an emergency situation.

Protective Systems

A ring-shaped reinforcement frame helps provide high-impact protection for the passenger compartment. An advanced airbag system deploys up to six airbags, with Forester, Outback and Tribeca models also including a rollover sensor. And the engine's low placement is designed to allow it to drive under the chassis in a front-end collision, further protecting the passenger area.

Visibility and Child Safety

Every Subaru is designed for optimal visibility, from generously sized windows to an available rear-vision camera on certain models, helping to improve rear visibility. Every vehicle also comes standard with the LATCH child safety rear seat system and rear child door locks. All sedan models are equipped with a self-illuminated inside-the-trunk release handle to help avoid entrapment.

Taking Care of Your Most Precious Passengers

Because adventures shared with the family are so much richer, you're sure to frequently include your children on your journeys. When designing a vehicle, we think seriously about the safety of young passengers, and we include features designed especially to protect them.

Rear Child-Safety Door Locks

A quick flip of a switch and either or both of the inside rear door exit handles will be disabled so that children will not be unable to accidentally open the door from the inside.

Internal Child-Safety Trunk Release with Self-illuminating Handle

Every Subaru with an enclosed trunk area receives an extra dose of safety with the Internal Child-Safety Trunk Release. If someone is trapped in the trunk, they simply have to pull the self-illuminating handle from the inside and the trunk opens.

LATCH System

A better way to secure child safety seats and protect your most precious passengers. The LATCH system found in the rear seats of all Subaru models is compatible with virtually every up-to-date child car seat. It allows you to secure the seat at two fixed anchor points placed low and built right into the frame of the vehicle's rear seat. Creating a tight and secure connection you can rely on to keep the child safety seat in place.

Advanced Frontal Airbag System (SRS)

Front passenger airbags are not recommended if the front passenger is a child -- especially if that child is in a child safety seat. If equipped, a sensor in the front seat can determine whether it's an adult or a child sitting there. If it detects that either the seat is unoccupied or occupied by a child, it will disable the front airbag, thereby avoiding any harm it could possibly do7.

Rear Vision Camera

Children don't always pay perfect attention to their surroundings. That's why you need to. The rear vision camera allows you to keep a close eye on what's behind you when you're backing up -- even things or people that may be too short to see through the rear window.

Frequently Asked Questions related to Child Safety

1. Do you have any recommendations for child seats for my Subaru?

Because there are so many child seats on the market today, we feel that it is best that you contact one of these organizations for assistance:

National SAFEKIDS Campaign at 800-441-1888
or
SafetyBeltSafe USA at 800-745-7233

The Service Manager at Tucson Subaru should have instructions available for installation of child car seats for our vehicles. You may wish to set up an appointment with your Service Manager, who can assist you in trying to fit your child seat to your Subaru. If you would like to discuss this further, you may contact us directly at (520) 721-2400. or go to our Contact Us section of www.TucsonSubaru.com.

2. How can I find out more about child safety seat anchorage systems?

Since offering our 1985 models, Subaru has equipped our vehicles with tether anchor points. To inquire about ordering a tether anchor kit for your Subaru, contact your Tucson Subaru. With all new 2000 model year Subaru vehicles, tether anchors were included with the car. Our 2001 Legacy and Outback models include the new LATCH system. All 2002 Impreza models include the LATCH system, as well as all 2003 Forester and Baja models include the LATCH system. Unfortunately, there is no retro-fit kit available for vehicles prior to these model years.

For more information about LATCH systems, please go to www.Drive.Subaru.com. On-Line Exclusives, "Information on the LATCH System" shown in the Drive Magazine Fall 2002 issue.

You can also refer to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) Web site's (www.nhtsa.dot.gov) and enter "FAQ" in the Search Section. You will be able to locate and link to their Frequently Asked Questions on LATCH.
